Lumber is typically sold by its nominal size, which is its dimension before it's planed smooth. The actual size is smaller. The standard practice is to always use the nominal dimensions for board foot calculation.

A board foot (BF or bd. ft.) is a unit of measurement for the volume of lumber. It's equivalent to a piece of wood that is 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. It's the standard unit for selling most hardwoods in North America.
For rough-sawn lumber, the nominal and actual dimensions are the same. For surfaced (planed) lumber, the footage is traditionally calculated based on the nominal (pre-milling) dimensions. For example, a "1x6" piece is actually 0.75" x 5.5", but you calculate its footage as if it were 1" x 6". Always confirm with your supplier how they price their wood.
A good rule of thumb is to add a 10-15% waste factor. This accounts for material lost to saw kerfs (the width of the blade), trimming ends, cutting out defects like knots or cracks, and potential mistakes. For projects with many angled cuts, you might consider increasing this to 20%.

The key difference is what they measure. A linear foot is a simple measure of 1D length (a straight line 12 inches long), regardless of width or thickness. A board foot, however, is a measure of 3D volume (1 ft long x 1 ft wide x 1 in thick).
The board footage of a 2x4 depends on its length. For example, to find the board feet in an 8-foot-long 2x4, the calculation would be: (2 in. × 4 in. × 8 ft.) / 12 = 5.33 board feet. A 10-foot 2x4 would be 6.67 board feet.
You can't directly convert between them without knowing thickness because square feet measure area (2D), while board feet measure volume (3D). However, if your material is exactly 1 inch thick nominal, the numbers are the same (e.g., an area of 320 sq ft that is 1 inch thick = 320 board feet).
